Moving to Victoria BC
The single most useful thing to understand before moving here is that Greater Victoria is thirteen municipalities, not one city, and the differences between them are larger than the map suggests.
Thirteen municipalities, three school districts, one region
Each municipality sets its own zoning, secondary-suite rules and property tax rate. Servicing runs from fully municipal in the core to private wells and septic across much of the rural west. Schools are split across three districts whose boundaries do not follow municipal lines.
Practically, that means "Victoria" in a listing may mean the City of Victoria or may mean the region, and the difference affects tax, servicing, school catchment and what you may build.
Getting here, and getting off the island
Victoria is on an island, and that is a lifestyle fact and a logistics fact. Ferries and flights both exist, both are weather-dependent in winter, and both need booking discipline in summer. Anyone who will travel frequently to the mainland should price and time that honestly before choosing where in the region to live.
