Growth, capacity and why catchment can move

Sustained residential growth across the West Shore means new schools, boundary reviews and capacity pressure are ordinary events here rather than exceptions. A catchment that applies when an offer is written is not a permanent characteristic of the property.

For a family buying specifically for a school, the question to put to the district directly is not only "what is the catchment" but "is this school at or near capacity, and is a boundary review underway".

The Ministry lists 29 public schools in SD62 Sooke in our data: 20 elementary, 5 middle and 4 secondary. They sit in Colwood, Langford, Metchosin, Sooke. 7 of them list a French immersion programme. Neighbourhood-school enrolment was 13,618 in 2025/2026, up34% from 10,169 in 2017/2018 (our calculation from the Ministry's counts).

What the numbers say about SD62

SD62 is the region's growth district. Its neighbourhood schools went from 10,169 students in 2017/2018 to 13,618 in 2025/2026, an increase of about 34% (our calculation from the Ministry's counts). It grew in every year of the series but one: in 2020/21 it slipped by 24 students, while the other two districts each lost several hundred.

The building programme follows the numbers. A new secondary school, North Langford Secondary on Gateway Road, is planned for 2,000 students and scheduled to open in fall 2030. The district also notes that catchment schools can overflow, so a new West Shore buyer should expect the assigned school and the school a child attends to differ in some years, and should check the locator for the specific address rather than a neighbour's experience.

The steepest single year was 2021/22, when SD62's neighbourhood schools added 875 students, more than the district had added in the previous three years combined.

Langford alone has 13 of the district's 29 schools, Colwood 8 and Sooke 6; Metchosin has one, and the Highlands none.

SD62 serves Langford, Colwood, Sooke, Metchosin and the Highlands, and part of View Royal: the Town of View Royal levies both SD61 and SD62 school rates.
